The scale of the submerged ruins, covering several sqare miles and at distances of upto a mile from shore, ranks this as a major marine-archeaological discovery as spectacular as the ruined cities submerged off Alexandria in Egypt”.

We are celebrating today two persons – Mathuram Bhoothalingam and P G Sundararajan.

We are celebrating a genre in writing – Letters.

And we are celebrating a relationship – what may one call it ? ‘Relationship’ is a loaded word. I use it advisedly.

I would suggest we neither waste any noun on it, nor expend any adjective to describe it.

In Jiddu Krishnamurti’s language, let us just observe it.

Without those two persons having known one another there would have been no letters between them. Without those letters, there would have been no relationship between them. Without a relationship between them, their knowing one another and writing to each other could have been a thing of no importance or interest.

And Sri K R A Narasiah would have devoted his time post-retirement from the Indian Navy and his astonishing skill with historical narration to writing about the history of Indian seafaring , ports and lighthouses.

But that conjunction did occur, Mathuram Bhoothalingam as Krithika and P G Sundararajan as Chitti did meet and get to write the letters which Sri Narasiah has with rare sensitivity double-distilled into this slim book, the size of which belies its strength.  The book also carries, I must mention, as a foretaste to the delectation of the letters themselves, a poignant Foreword by my esteemed friend of many years, the bibliophile, aesthete , civil servant and social commentator , Sri V.Sundaram.

Krithika was a bigger person than most who did not know her, realized. This appellation – ‘Mrs’ – is curious. Just consider those three characters of the English language in the Roman script.

                                                               2

‘Mr’ as an abbreviation of the full word ‘Mister’, can be understood. Its ‘M’ and ‘r’ are the first and last letters of the full word. But if ‘Mrs’ were to be expanded to its full phonetic potential, you will find that the letter ‘r’ is nowhere in it. It is a complete intrusion. Abbreviated to ‘Mrs’, however, the ‘r’ creeps in, as if from nowhere, like a  wall, separating the ‘M’ from the ‘s’ as if to  say ‘Mrs’ is the ‘Mr’ with an ‘s’ added , that is all. Likewise , ‘Srimati’ and ‘Thirumati’ are ‘Sri’ and ‘Thiru’ with a suffix, no more.  And we of course have accepted this as a ‘given’. We have accepted ‘Mrs’ as a given, as an adjunct, an accompaniment, a corollary , of ‘Mr’.

How much can a mere abbreviation obfuscate !

S.Bhoothalingam was not interested in diminishing or abridging Mathuram Bhoothalingam’s sensibility. On the contrary, he was a truly modern and emancipated man in frank admiration, even awe, of his gifted wife. But a flask, even when transparently self-abnegating as the protector and preserver of the temperature of its contents, is a flask. It contains, it holds, it  secures. But it does not, indeed it cannot, permit the substance within to take a  shape  other than its own. Whence arises the need for a pseudonym. And there again, let us not miss the irony. What is truly one’s own, made of one’s own choice, volition and in utter freedom from the tastes and predilections of one’s parents or one’s spouse, one’s own pen-name, is called ‘pseudo’. Reality has to go into hiding in order to break loose and breathe free. When men use pseudonyms, they gain the excitement of obscurity. When women use them, they gain the joy of an independent identity.

Charlotte Bronte wrote Jane Eyre under the name Currer Bell . Emily Bronte wrote Wuthering Heights as Ellis Bell. And of course the world knows the author of The Mill on the Floss , Silas Marner  and Middlemarch, not by her own name Mary Ann , but as George Eliot. Agatha Christie kept her first name, devised the surname, dropping her  own ‘Miller’. And who can be expected to know that Ayn Rand’s real name is  Alisa Zinovyevna Rosenbaum. Some use initials , true initials, which serve – though  with varying purposes, I am sure –  that veil the author’s persona in their own way. We have A.S.Byatt, P.D.James, M.M.Kaye, M.A.Griffiths, J.K.Rowling, who added the ‘K’ in the middle though she does not have a middle name. There are examples of  distinguished women authors in Tamil writing under a pen-name, like Ambai and Bama.

Krithika is, if anything, independent. Independent in what she chooses to think of  and independent  in what and how she chooses to write upon.

                                                                   3

But hers is not the independence of vagrancy. It is the independence of one who has a ticket in her hand, an open ticket, with destinations unmarked. She travels, she does not lurch. And in her letters to Chitti, she  journeys with a companion with an identical travel document. How delicious , how altogether delectable, to travel with someone who becomes a friend on the journey, with no worries of excess baggage on one’s hand or left-luggage to be collected on return, only conversation, recollection, and banter !

And yet the letters between Krithika and Chitti are not light. They are not chat. They are not ‘side-stuff’. They are about the times, about people, about what is being written, thought, said. They do not seek the other’s corroboration, though they sometimes seem to revel in approval. They do not seek to impress, though they sometimes seem to like having that effect. They also are not meant for posterity though I suspect they are being written in the knowledge that they are going into some little box or cabinet, some table-drawer or old trunk where they will be excavated from in a lonely hour, by a lonely lamp, for a lonely read when no one else is looking.

The first question that occurred to me, when I  saw the correspondence, was : Were Krithika and Chitti in love ?

But no, no such luck.

Then, the next question that came to me was: Were Krithika and Chitti into some joint confessional?

Again, no luck.

Were they seeking shoulders to lean on, perhaps even to cry on ?

No. They were utterly self-possessed.

Are they the Karuthamma and Pareekutti of Thakazhi’s Chemmeen ?

No!

And then I realized I was missing the whole point of the letters. I was trying to find the predictable and the trite in what was altogether different, fresh and autonomous. I was trying to find the stereo-typical in what was original.

Unless Sri Narasiah has edited out things which belonged to the world of privileged communication, there is no indication that Eros hides somewhere between the lines of these letters. If Eros does, that would be good for Eros. If Eros does not, it matters not.

                                                                      4

Letters from a man to another man, from a woman to another woman would raise no eyebrows. But letters , a whole series of them , stretching over more than four decades from – and let me speak as if I am seated in a temple’s courtyard  in Chennai – letters from one married lady to a married gentleman…sollunga saar, adhu sariyaa ? They have to raise not just eyebrows but hackles.  This is a reflection on us, our limitations. Two individuals are above all individuals . Whether they  are man and woman, married or otherwise, has to be beside the point, especially when what are being written are letters  that contain reflections, observations.

Why one wants to say something to one particular person, and not to another, why some jokes are best shared with one and nor another, why one would wish to exclude someone even very close, while talking to someone else, all these questions are impossible to answer. That is how it is. Human relationships are not be dissected. They are to be observed.

Letters that are not business letters, or written with a purpose or a motive, letters that ‘just happen’ like Topsy in Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin do not seek to introduce themselves, or define anything, much less the relationship they are in. But they are in a relationship, a relationship that is not incident on past association or future strengthening.

They are  in the relationship that shares without expectation of gratitude or even of agreement. They are in a relationship which is its own Alpha and its Omega, its own justification.

They are letters because they happen to be written. They could well have been conversations. They could well have been thoughts unexpressed, but conveyed.

Krithika’s  and Chitti’s letters do not lead up to or culminate in anything. But they do aggregate into something. They aggregate into an understanding , a kind of compact, which says ‘We agree to not seek agreement or concordance, only communication’. They add up to the exchange of  the mind’s arrears and the heart’s accretions. The phrase ‘heart’s arrears’ is Vikram Seth, used by him The Golden Gate.

All of us have those – arrears of the mind and heart. We long to repay them , to our times, to our circumstances. When a great musician sings, he is not spouting Tyagaraja or Dikshitar alone. Something of his own heart’s arrears comes through in the rendering. Only crusty critics will say ‘Oh he had bhava allright , but his neraval was soft, his tanam limp…’. For God’s sake, audiences should  be a collective rasika , not a jury he is not a robot, but a man with debts of the mind, loans of the heart and, yes, mortgages of the soul to repay.

We need to express ourselves on things we do not have the chance to, in the ordinary transactions of life. Some of us write, sometimes well, sometimes very badly. Some of us speak, and speak, and speak, most times to the audience’s tearful tedium. Ask me.

Letters are to literature, what a whisper is to a speech.

                                                                        5

A thinking, feeling mind’s whisper is worth more than a stentorian’s earful.

Krithika wrote voluminously, as did Chitti. She wrote as she thought, without translating her words for official acceptance.

Talking of translations, let me urge caution. Krithika and Chitti write English of the first order. But it is their English. It sounds like them. It whispers like them. Let there be no hurry to render the letters into Tamil, the Tamil of someone else. Of Krithika’s or anyone’s Tamil, I can be no judge. Thanks to the generosity of Mina Swaminathan, I could dip into her Vasaveswaram. Krithika writes with a mastery of her language. ‘Her’ language is not just Tamil, but the Tamil she grew into. Something in me is awed when She says this about the central character Periyapaattaa : Nalla uram padaittha deham. Intha vayathirkuuda mushtiyai iruka piditthaaraanaal bhujam kandu kandaaha-t-tirandu ubbi nirkum.

The lines are rendered  in a way in which Periyapaattaa  goes and Albert Schwarzenegger comes in: “He was sturdily built. Even at this age, if he makes a hard fist, his shoulder muscles would bulge like iron balls.” Periyorgal ennai mannippaargal. T. Sriraman avargal ennai mannippaar.

Why I say let there be some caution in the matter of translation is that Krithika’s  masterly description of Periyappaataa in terms any callisthenist would be proud of becomes something else in someone else’s English . If these letters are ever taken up for translation into Tamil, let them be translated into her Tamil and his Tamil, not into the translator’s Tamil. Dialects are not wrond language, they are a sub-language, like mannerisms are not defects, only styles.

Krithika and Chitti need to be read not because they were literary geniuses, or they were social philosophers but because they were two individuals in a relationship of trust, intellectual, cultural and emotional trust.  And that relationship of trust is at a discount today.

Money is invested, deposits are parked, confidence is extended, admiration is advanced, allegiance is lent. But trust ? Trust is reposed. Reposing is a higher form of transfer, of placement than all the others. And letters are the most sublime vehicle for that reposing, which is why reading someone’s letter without permission is regarded as a wrong, interception by anyone, including the State, of letters is considered vile.

There is another reason why this volume is so precious. Letters are becoming an endangered species of writing. With the emergence of the e-mail and the SMS, letters, hand-written and ‘proper’ letters are a rarity.

                                                                      6

Imagine today’s young generation producing a Krithika and a Chitti fifty years from now. They will have acute observations to make, no doubt. They will will have points of view that are both interesting and valuable. But will they have the language, the expression ? Will they have the feel for communication ?

Krithika says in one letter to Chitti : “My four days in Madras seem a dream now. Not so our long morning drives ; I still feel the sands at Mahabalipuram beating against my cheeks…” That would perhaps be rendered on SMS like this : “Hey Chits… 4 dez Mds total dream, yar. But thoz morn drives! Awsum…M’pur sands biting me mug…wow”

But believe me, if the Krithika and Chitti of 2052 are true descendants in spirit of our Krithika abd Chitti, I would say their SMS correspondence would be a good read. Let us not be prudes.

Letters written in a relationship of trust are therefore a precious transaction which, when one is given the chance to read with legitimacy, is a privileged experience.

Chitti comes through the pages of this volume as a man of firm views, assessments and even predispositions. In other words, as a man who would have been a delight to know and a trouble to disagree with. I rue the fact that I did not get to meet and know  one so free of platitudes and predictability. In his letters to Krithika he is obviously seeking and discovering one he can exchange his thoughts with, almost as if in an exercise of self-nourishment.

Every serious relationship compensates for a lack in other relationships. Oravu enradu saadaarana vishayam illai. Puhai-yil than oruvaugal vasikkum.

The more undefined a relationship the more it is likely to be secure, provided others do not interfere with it. Defined relationships can also be secure, but rather like contracts entered into in faith and sustained in perseverance.

Chitti and Krithika reposed trust in one another’s sensibility, discretion and restraint in a relationship that did not suffer owing to lack of conventional typifications.

Their correspondence is therefore not just about their times, but about all that which is refined, restrained and redemptive about human relationships.

I commend Sri Narasiah for his devoted labour.  He has given  very few letters in full, from first line to last. Perhaps that whets our appetite for another edition in which he will give us that in the next round.

                                                                      7

I shall close with a suggestion. Many of you might have seen ‘Tumhari Amrita’, the play with two actors – Shabana Azmi and Farookh Shaikh . Then play is about letters written by one to the other. They are not man and wife. They are what they are. The letters are , simply, gripping. A play ‘Yours, Krithika’ in which two actors playing Krithika and Chitti read a selection of their letters in chronological sequence will be a huge education, and a huge success. The Museum theatre will overflow.

Let us look forward to such a production.
