2013ஆம் ஆண்டு கிரிக்கெட் உலகின் ஜாம்பவான் என அழைக்கப்பட்ட, சச்சின் டெண்டுல்கர், சர்வதேச கிரிக்கெட் போட்டிகளில் இருந்து ஓய்வு பெறுவதாக அறிவித்தார். மேற்கிந்திய தீவுகள் அணி உடனான, இரண்டு டெஸ்ட் போட்டிகள் கொண்ட தொடரில் இறுதியாகப் பங்கேற்று இருந்தார் சச்சின் டெண்டுல்கர்.

முதலாவது டெஸ்ட் போட்டியில், இந்திய அணி அதிகப்படியான விக்கெட்டுகளை இழந்து தடுமாறிக் கொண்டிருந்தபோது, யாரும் எதிர்பார்க்காத வகையில் சுழற்பந்து வீச்சாளரான அஸ்வின் அந்தப் போட்டியில் சதம் விளாசினார்.

அன்று முதல் தான், அஷ்வின் எனும் கிரிக்கெட் வீரரின் மானசீக ரசிகனாக மாறினேன். ரவிசந்திரன் அஷ்வின், களத்தில் எப்போதும் ஆக்ரோஷமான விளையாட்டு வீரராகவே நின்றார்.

2014ஆம் ஆண்டு, இந்தியா – நியூசிலாந்து அணிகளுக்கு இடையேயான ஐந்து ஒருநாள் போட்டிகள் கொண்ட தொடரின் மூன்றாவது ஒருநாள் போட்டி, நியூசிலாந்தில் நடைபெற்றது.

முதலில் நடந்த இரண்டு போட்டிகளிலும் இந்திய அணி தோல்வியைத் தழுவி இருந்ததால், இந்தப் போட்டியில் வெற்றி பெற்றால் தான் தொடரைக் கைப்பற்றும் வாய்ப்பைத் தக்கவைக்க முடியும் எனும் நிலையும் இருந்தது.

ஐந்து விக்கெட்டுகளுக்கு மேல் இழந்துவிட்ட நிலையில், களத்தில் இருந்தது அஸ்வினும் ரவீந்திர ஜடேஜாவும் தான்.

யாரும் எதிர்பார்க்காத வகையில் அன்றைய போட்டியில் சிறப்பாக விளையாடிய அஷ்வின்,  65 ரன்கள் விளாசி இருந்தார். இறுதியில், ஜடேஜாவின் முயற்சியால் அந்தப் போட்டி சமநிலையில் (tie) முடிந்தது.

அந்தப் போட்டியைத் தொலைக்காட்சியில் பார்த்துக்கொண்டிருந்த எனக்கு அப்பொழுது வெறும் பத்து வயது தான்.

இந்தியா போன்ற பரந்து விரிந்து 140 கோடி மக்களைத் தன்னகத்தே கொண்டிருக்கும் ஒரு தேசத்தில், இந்தியக் கிரிக்கெட் அணியில் 11 வீரர்கள் மட்டுமே களத்தில் இடம் பெற முடியும்.

அதிலும், தமிழ்நாட்டில் இருந்து இந்திய கிரிக்கெட் அணியில் நீடித்த இடம் பிடித்த வீரர்கள் மிக மிகச் சிலரே. கிருஷ்ணமாச்சாரி ஸ்ரீகாந்த் போன்ற வீரர்களுக்குப் பிறகு, தமிழகத்தைச் சேர்ந்த சிறந்த இந்திய கிரிக்கெட் வீரராக அஷ்வின் புகழ் பெற்றார்.

540க்கும் அதிகமான விக்கெட்டுகளை வீழ்த்தி, சர்வதேச டெஸ்ட் கிரிக்கெட் போட்டிகளில் அதிக விக்கெட்டுகளை வீழ்த்திய ஏழாவது வீரர் என்னும் சாதனையோடு தன்னுடைய ஓய்வு முடிவை, 2024 டிசம்பர் 18ஆம் தேதி அறிவித்திருக்கிறார். இன்னும் சில ஆண்டுகள் விளையாடுவார் என எதிர்பார்த்திருந்த நிலையில், அஷ்வின் ஓய்வு அறிவிப்பு, கிரிக்கெட் ரசிகர்களை அதிர்ச்சியில் ஆழ்த்தியுள்ளது.

It was dark. Shanmugayya noticed a lorry accident near the railway track in Tenkasi and sensed something would go wrong if the train passes the track.

He immediately rushed to his wife and both together raised voice against the oncoming train. And to be in safe side he used his torch and showed it to the engine driver making him to realise the danger.

The rail was stopped and a major accident was averted.

Shanmugayya 60 did not bother about his age and took all the efforts to take the terrain and made it to the track to make this feat.

Loco pilot of the rail was too happy to be part of this Incident.

Tamilnadu Government had announced a reward of Rs Five Lakhs to the couple.
