HEROINE TO HER FRIEND & CONFIDANTE<\/strong>
(To remove the fear that she may not bear with the
separation of her lover on a purpose)<\/p>\n

FLOCK OF HOUSE SPARROWS<\/strong><\/p>\n

My dear friend! Listen to me!
My sweet heart has gone away
To a country afar ! But,
Will there not be the usual
Sight of flock of House sparrows
Which have brown wings like faded bloom of lilies
In the country where he sojourns?
If then, he could see the sparrows
Swiftly flying and diving on
The corns which are spread
On the courtyards to get dried;
And then, moving on from there
To the little heaps of green manures
Blended with loss soil pushed to the edges
Where they will heartily plough with
Their tiny little beaks and enjoy!
Then he would also see them take flight
Straight to their safe abo
That are their nests built on the place
Beneath the roof and above the wall
And happily live in with their little chicks!
Will not this scenario sublime
Strike the heart and soul of my dear lover
By the loneliness of the late evening there?<\/p>\n

This poem from Kurunthogai, one of the \u2018Eight Anthologies\u2019 of Sangam Literature presents us the following important message:<\/p>\n

The poem signifies that the house sparrows are a species which will freely mingle with the people\u2019s abodes comfortably; they are a common sight in every human habitats; people loved them; these little birds are a symbol of pleasant and happy living; their nesting at the houses, edges, and crevices is welcome by the occupants; people indeed took it as a good omen which indicated that they would live a life of joy and prosperity as a family.<\/p>\n

There is a direct message in this poem :<\/p>\n

The gay and mirth of the flight of the house sparrows, their very sight of love and affection they shower to their pairs and chicks impress those witness it; their very presence causes the lovers who are separated temporarily, to get inspiration for their early union and a blissful life.<\/p>\n

We shall try to preserve this species amidst proliferation of modern and sophisticated structures in urban agglomerations which have posed a threat to their very existences. We shall take a vow to protect them.<\/p>\n
