Born in Jaffna, in the year 1941, Maravanpulavu Kanapathipillai Sachithanananthan graduated with a Degree in Zoology from the University of Madras in 1963. After obtaining his Masters Degree in Zoology with Marine Biology from the University of Madras under the Government of India General Scholarship Scheme, he served as a Research Officer in the Sri Lanka Scientific Service, Colombo. As a marine biologist, he has carried out scientific investigations related to, the Beche-de-mer fishery of Sri Lanka and the physical, chemical and biological nature of the Jaffna lagoon. On a scholarship from the Government of Japan, he underwent training in Marine Biochemistry in Tokyo. He participated in UNESCO training programme on Marine Microbiology in Singapore. As an Expert / Consultant to the UN/FAO he worked for 23 Governments in Asia, Africa and the Pacific, travelling through 60 countries across the world. His travels and consultancies helped him acquire proficiency in languages such as Sinhalese, English, Japanese and Arabic. His extensive studies on marine ecology related issues of the Sethusamudram project provided support to the Government of India towards speedy implementation. His research publications were carried by reputed journals in Sri Lanka, Australia, Japan and the UK and some of them are available in French, Arabic, Swahili and Japanese. His intense zeal for the Tamil language motivated him to obtain a Masters Degree in Tamil from the University of Madras in 1992.

Subsequent to the communal disturbances of July 1977, he resigned from the Sri Lanka Scientific Service to join the teaching faculty of the University of Jaffna, to serve for two years. He also established Kaanthalakam, a book publishing house in Jaffna. In 1980 he established Kaanthalakam in Chennai, India.

He made meaningful international contacts with people and governments in making them aware of the problems faced by the Tamils at home and canvassed support for the suffering Tamils of his native land who are very close to his heart. He has been singularly responsible for inducing the Government of Tamilnadu to grant a sum of Rs. 100 crores for the relief of Sri Lankan refugees living in the refugee camps of Tamilnadu in December 2009.

Post-retirement from active scientific service, he plays an active role in propagating the cultural heritage of India. His contribution in the proliferation of knowledge towards self-realisation and life sustainability through www.thevaaram.org, the internet site for Panniru Thirumurai is noteworthy. From 2010, he is the coordinator of the project for the Tirumalai Tiruppathi Devasthanam to translate the Panniru Thirumurai from Tamil to Telugu. So far 7,090 songs of the 18,268 hymns have been translated by experts in the field. He is also the coordinator for the project of the Dharmapuaram Adheenam of Mayiladuthurai for translating the Panniru Thirumurai from Tamil to Kannada, Malayalam, Sanskrit, Hindi, Sinhalese and Burmese. His unique efforts are to promote and foster knowledge-sharing among different linguistic groups occupying a common cultural area by rendering centuries old middle age literature hymns of the Tamil language in other languages for reading by more people over a greater geographical space thus broadening the bases of their thought and perspective, less parochial and more universal.

In recognition of Maravanpulavu Kanapathipillai Sachithanananthan’s individual effort and contributions to industry and society, friendship and harmony, peace, literature, knowledge-sharing and progress and spirituality, Karpagam University is pleased to confer on Maravanpulavu Kanapathipillai Sachithanananthan the Degree of Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) in the 3rd Convocation on 23rd December 2012 and wishes him many more years of useful service to society.
