This method of drawing is called “scratch-board” technique.

R.S.ManiIn the earlier days, a card board would be coated with black ink. By scratching on it, one could bring out the images.

In a normal drawing, we bring darkness to light on a white paper, to create an image. On a scratch-board we bring the light to darkness on the black surface. With this technique we can create powerful lighting effects.

Nowadays a product called Claybord is available. This is much more durable than the traditional scratch-board. You can read a short description of Claybord Black in the following Wikipedia link:

I love to work on white Claybord for watercolors and acrylics. The result would be different from working on paper or canvas.

Using a photograph I took in Badrinath as reference, I made the attached drawing on a Claybord Black. This is one of my favourite art works.

    படம் அருமையாக இருக்கிறது. வெய்யிலில் அமர்ந்திருப்போர் முன் விழும் நிழல் வரை கவனமாகக் கண்டு சித்தரித்திருப்பது சிறப்பாக இருக்கிறது. இருளையையும் ஒளியையும் இணைத்து அமைந்துள்ள ஓவியங்களுக்கு இந்தப் படம் வரையும் முறை நன்கு கைகொடுக்கும் போலுள்ளது. பகிர்ந்து கொண்டமைக்கு மிக்க நன்றி.

    மிக அழகான ஓவியம். முதலில் பார்த்த போது, ஒளியும் நிழலும் கலந்த பிம்பங்கள், புகைப்படம் போன்ற பிரமையை ஏற்படுத்தின என்றால் மிகையில்லை. மிக நல்லதொரு பகிர்வுக்கு மிக்க நன்றி.
